Global Parameters and linked models

I've been testing uses for global parameters in our workflow (IT/Security/AV Consulting), and I'm having trouble with linked models.  Since we are always working with a linked model from the architect, this is an issue.

Consider - we are placing card readers, or room schedulers, or whatever near doors.  I'd like to place them a consistent distance from the door, and GPs seem like a useful tool for managing what that distance is.  If the linked model uses shared coordinates, I cannot use the GPs at all - a real limitation, but it's at least a known, documented issue.

But if the models are linked origin-to-origin, i can constrain the distance between my family and some part of the linked mode (the distance from door to card reader, for example), but I cannot change it.  I invariably get a "Constrains cannot be satisfied" warning.

Are others seeing this?

I understand you have a question on using Global Parameters. Global Parameters are not designed to work in the manner you described in your video. You can use them in a single project file, but are not assigned to categories like project parameters. Global parameters can be simple values, values derived from equations, or values taken from the model using other global parameters.

In your case you will have to use a Shared Parameter or another means of setting the distance. Here's a link on Shared Parameters. I hope this helps and let me know if you have additional questions or comments.

Thanks for posting.
