Use the Opening by Face tool in the Modify tab, or a face based family with a void precutting the solid host.

I tried Opening BY face tool , But its not work .

It's working only with concrete  . I don't know why .

How to do the face based family ?

- Start a new family from the (Metric) Generic Model Face Based
- Draw a void (extrusion, sweep, or whatever) on the face of the solid. The void should go in the solid, not out.
- Add a reference plane to control the depth of the void if needs be.
- Use Cut geometry to cut the solid with the void
- Load the void in your project and place it on a face of the beam and see it cuts the beam

Anyway, the Face Opening tool should cut any beam, wood or steel or concrete.

You don't need to use cut geometry on the beam. Do it in the family. Read the steps carefully.

Yes thank you , But There are a revit problem .

it's work By this Trick :

First I have to make the opening by face , no change will appear for the steel beam .

Then I have to change the steel beam type to concrete .

Then return the beam type to steel . and the opining will appear .!!!

I don't why this issue happened .

Thank you a lot for your help .

Opening by Face doesn't work on some structural framing elements (steel beams or columns) in Revit.

This feature is not enabled for Fabrication steel elements.  Once steel beam or column is used for creating steel connection by Steel Connection module in Revit, it is automatically converted onto Fabrication element.

Make opening before using such element in Steel Connections, or use Contour Cut feature from Steel ribbon palette for Fabrication elements instead of Opening by Face

Hi @barthbradley ,

I'm having problems like you said.
Now, i used generic model face base void to opening steel beam, it's ok, after that, i use contour cut, but my generic model face base return and steel beam is not cut.
Can you solve this issue ?
Many thanks.

Just use the Opening by Face tool on the Architecture Tab.
