Generic Model shows as default grey Instead of Assigned Material

I have created a Generic Model family. Within the family, I have created Material parameters so that when it is loaded into a project the material can be changed to whatever is desired. When the family is loaded into the project, and the Material parameter is changed to a specific material type, the Generic Model family still shows as Default Revit Grey (in Realistic Display).

Do all Generic Models always show up as Grey with no way to change material? Could the issue be the nested families (even though the material parameter has been "moved forward" for lack of a better term)?

*"moved forward" just means that I've established a material parameter in the base family and when nested it is set to the material parameter of the host family. Ideally, I should be able to change the material in the project and that should propogate throughout the family.

The image attached to this post shows my Revit family on the right. I would like it to have materials similar to the object on the left.

I found the problem.

It is a (embarassingly) simple issue once identified. The nested family's Material type had not been set to recognize the material parameter. I had not selected the model geometry and clicked the button to the right of the Material to associate it's material with the parameter I had created for the material type.
