I need to close the end, I created a generic family, leave the material as <By Category>, but after I brought it to the project, I didn't see material listed, no idea where to edit the material?
Don't leave the material of the family By Category because it would take the Generic Models material from Object Styles. Assign an instance Material parameter to it (click the radio button to the right). This is my preferred method.
Or, create a subcategory in the family and assign your family to it, and you can keep the material By Category, then change the material for that subcategory in the project Object Styles.

But still I don't see where I can edit the material in the project after I bring the family into the project. I have a material in the project that I am going to use, but I can't bring it to the family, so I random pick a material as place holder.

Is Metal Roofing a material or a material parameter? Click this button to assign an instance Material Parameter.
