Family appears as symbolic view in plan

The family, a backflow preventer, appears correctly on site plans. But on my typical floor plan, the geometry is hidden and only the symbols for the preventers are visible:

Open the Family, select the Geometry and edit its Visibility Settings. Tick the checkbox next to Visible in Plan/RCP View. 

....wait a minute. Set your View to Medium or Fine.  Does that work for you?

is there a way to change the family behavior rather than the view behavior? That suggestion worked but I still need to preserve a coarse detail level on my plans.

Sure. Under VGOs, set the Detail Level for the Category to Medium or Fine. 

...just to be clear, when you do this, all the Elements of that Category will display as per the VGO Detail Level Override - not the View Detail Level.
