each instance of the family (regardless of types) has its own ID number.
"door" has 12 types in Revit the model has 45 instances in the model it will create 45 blocks
Autocad does not breakdown this information, it simply creates another block.
now depending on how complex the family is will certainly create large file sizes when exported to AutoCAD.

This would need an additional step - to go back to the example of 45 instances of doors - look at the doors, designate a block / blocks, and replace the others with it, then run a PURGE to delete the duplicates. Running OVERKILL after this step would also be helpful.

Hello, When I export my fire alarm Revit model to CAD file all the "devices" are exploded instead of blocks. What can I do to avoid that? I need the devices NOT to be exploded. Any suggestion? thoughts? Thanks in advanced!
Maybe a bit late but perhaps still helpful for you or future readers...
We as electrical draughtsman and engineers use symbols. In Revit these symbols are Generic Annotations which are added as a nested family and only have a visibility in a Plan View. When exported to CAD, Revit creates blocks from the geometry, but Generic Annotations are exported as separate lines. So that's probably your issue.
Symbolic lines which are added directly to the family are exported into the block as well. But since symbolic lines don't react to scale changes like Generic Annotations do, these lines IMHO aren't a solution.
