Export from Revit to DWG/Rhino in 3D

Hi everyone!

 

I'm trying to export my 3D Revit model to Rhino for rendering etc. My issue is that when I export, all my walls, floors, etc end up on categorized layers; ie all walls on wall layer, all floors on floor, etc.

 

Is there anyway (if anyone has ever done this) to separate these when exporting so that each wall type and floor type are on different layers? I don't have that many of each but it's a multistory building and selecting and modifying each wall/floor to their own layer for renderings is super time consuming and a general pain in the a**.

 

Help, pretty please!!!!

One method to acheive your desired workflow is to leverage the DWG export options with specific sub-object categories that you will have to setup. It's alot of work, so I would only recommend this if you use this workflow often and/or in a structured team environment where the modelers follow office standards.

 

In summary:

1. Create object sub-categories for each distinct object type
(ex. Curtain Panel type would have mullion, glass, spandrel, joint sub-objetcts;

2. Model your families with the parametric elements assigned to the respective object sub-categories
(ex. Curtain panel with glass pane on sub-category glass and perimeter gasket on joint sub-category);

3. Set the export configuration to map each sub-category to  a distinct Autocad layer 
(ex. mullion = A-CURT-MUL, glass = A-CURT-GLAZ, spandrel = A-CURT-SPAN, etc)

 

The resulting exported DWG will have the geometry assigned to each Autocad layer.

 

Not the best method if rendering is the final objective. I don't have experience with Rhino, but you should look at the Rhino support group for examples of importing DWG with materials.

oops... you said Family TYPES -- not the Compound Assemblies' "Layers".

I have several different types of walls - rendering the elevation would display a pattern from these walls. So I just want them exported on separate layers so I don't have to select and change layer for all these objects. 

 

I exported through DWG - ACIS solids. They came out as separate objects - but all the walls are on one layer. This would be fine if this was a one story building but it's an entire housing project so selecting each one is crazy time-consuming.

 

Any ideas?

That does sound complicated - and yes, it's only for rendering purposes. I wasn't super happy with Vray rendering in Revit. It was too slow and less user friendly than on Rhino - at least for me. 

 

Unfortunately, this is a school project so I would never use these settings again. I was hoping there was a quick fix - haha. Silly me.

Hey,

A little late response, but an useful one. I have had similar issues when I transferred my files from Revit to Rhino. Then I came across the BIMDeX plugins which helped me to transfer files across these software without any loss of data. You can try them as well.
