Export 3D views fail in PDF and DWG

Trying to print\export sheets to PDF and DWG format. Revit crashes when the sheet has any type of cropped 3D view. Tried a 3rd paty addon and autodesk native export\print. Same Results. Have disbaled all add-ins - same result of crash.

You can change the 3D to all variations of hidden\wireframe, etc - same crash.

Only way to print to PDF is a Raster print - thats our work around.

But there is no feasible way to export to DWG that we can find. Have gone through all posts, helps, etc of deleting views, etc. Only one we haven't tried is recreating the view from scratch. Mainly because this is 3 hour exercise to start again.

Have done an audit on the file - same crash.

At our wits end - any suggestions would be appreciated as we have over 100 drawings to print.

Hello @craig 

First, I recommend checking whether Autodesk has released any updates for the version of Revit you are currently using. If a newer update is available, make sure to install the latest one.

For DWG export, since DWG does not support certain visual styles, such as Shadows or Shading (from the Visual Style settings), I suggest disabling these features before exporting to DWG. This is especially important for 3D views that include shadows or similar visual effects.

Additionally, please make sure that no Navisworks files (NWC/NWD) are linked into your Revit model. If any are present, temporarily unload them and then try exporting again, as linked coordination models can sometimes cause export or print crashes.

My approach in these situations is to export a PDF or an image of the 3D view. Alternatively, I will take the view into a rendering application like Twinmotion to improve its quality before saving it as an image. I then insert this static image onto the sheet. This method ensures Revit doesn't have to process the complex 3D view during printing, which typically resolves crashing issues.

Aware of the issues with 3D shading, etc to DWG. This was my first suspect also. You can turn it to a dumb wire frame as it still fails. It's almost like once it fails you can't get rid of it ??

All updates have been done. This was happening in a 2025 project so I upgraded it to see if that would fix it - no.

Come on Autodesk - it's exporting to your own proprietary file format that has been around for 30+ years ??? Get you act together PLEASE !!!!!!

Yep - that a work around once your design is static. The idea of Revit is that everything is live so as you develop a design, you take away the "oh I have to update that".

We do that for presentation images but these are working drawings with a 3D of a stair core to better illustrate it to contractors.

Appreciate the work around but Revit seems to be fuil of "workarounds" just to do simple things
