Elevation view of RPC Tree

I am trying to improve on the out of the box RPC trees.  Does anyone have any advice on how to change a trees 2D symoblic representation in Front/Back/Left/Right view to something that looks a bit more like the second attached image and less like the first.  That middle line in the first image is really bugging us.  I've tried making an annotation family and nesting it in the RPC family but I can't get the filled region to be hosted on anything but the plan view working plane.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

I found my problem.  Revit wouldn't let me place the annotation family on a vertical reference plane until I had named that reference plane.  Once I did that it had not problem simply letting me apply an imported DWG fill directly to the elevation view.
