Divide a Path - "Divide" tool like AutoCAD

Can someone explain this better: Divide a Path: http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2015/ENU... (Attachment is an image of this description

After selecting the line and having the Modify | Lines tab open, I have no idea what the "Divide Panel" is and I don't see a symbol like that anywhere...

Will this be the same function as the "divide" tool in AutoCAD?

That funtionality is within the conceptual mass editor, not within the project environment.

Thanks for the clarification.

Does that mean there is no way to do this within the standard project environment?

Correct. That functionality is intended primarily to create evenly spaced nodes. Nodes, of course, are intended to host regular or adaptive points to further the building of mass families, by using them for the hosting of lines, splines, or nested adaptive components.

Within the project environment, if you actually want to divide something like a wall, you literally divide it. If you want the divisions evenly spaced, you dimension them and create an equals contraint. Project curtain walls, specifically, have native divisions that are controlled by family parameters. Or maybe you just want to position repeating elements at an equal spacing. You do the same thing with dimensions again.

It might be a nice feature to create a divided line in the project environment, using it for insertion points of repeating families, like maybe exterior wall light fixtures, or parking spaces, or slab cut-lines or whatever. And even stretch the line out to have our elements spread out. That would be cool. But as it is we don't have that functionality in the project environment. We just use dimensions, constraints, arrays, etc.

That's the conclusion I've come to. Unfortuantely, the "literally divide it" and set dimensions as equal doesn'rt seem to work with a curve (I found that work-around earlier). We ended up just doing the math, but agreed - A divided line tool would come on useful!

beside using dimensions is it also possible for  straight lines and arcs to do a division using array...

a short line or another symbol ....the intersection with the main line is a snap point.

We use the Mass element, which allows us to create and divide lines. Here are a couple images that explain it:
