Dimensions - How can I add a suffix to all dimensions as a type?

Is there a way to add a suffix in the dimension type?  I have a bunch of dimensions that I would like to add a suffix character to each dimension.  I can't seem to find away to do this without clicking on each dimension and then adding it.

Be nice to have it added as I place the dimensions.

Thanks for the help

There is currently no approach to add a suffix to the entire dimension type; this is currently an instance override applied to the dimension element.
Also, while you can select all instances in view \ project you cannot double-click to edit the text while they are all selected.  Unfortunately you need to deselect and do one at a time.
The only approach I’ve found to get close to the desired result is to apply a suffix override to one dimension line, then use the Modify > Copy tool to move it to another element.  It will maintain the suffix with this workflow:

Ryan,

Thank you very much.  I didn't think of doing it that way.  that will cut sometime, but would be nice to have the ability to add a suffix in the future.

This will work though for me.

Caddman,

Have you heard of a solution to the dimension suffix question as of Revit 2017?

Thanks,

Terry

2017 doesn't have anything new to allow a prefix or suffix in a dimension style. I still do the copy command to move it to other objects in the model.  Maybe soon they will allow this to happen.

Also you can send a product feedback into them asking for it.  Here is the link.

Depending on how important it is and how flexible you are with how it will display, I have a workaround for you.

In the dimension type settings, find the option to show Alternate Units below or to the right.  Then in the Alternate Units Format dialogue, select mm for the units, "Custom" for the rounding and make the rounding increment a billion or something like that.  Choose "none" for the unit symbol and hit OK.  Now the next line lets you choose a prefix for those alternate units.  So, now you have the ability to add a prefix to all dimensions at once.  The only problem is, you will have a "0" that you might rather not have.  Again, it is about choosing your priorities.

Thank you.
Very creative, but I couldn't live with the zero at the end.
Then, something very interesting happened...while I had a string of dimensions selected (modified like you instructed with extra zero) , I changed the "Equality Display" to be "Equality Formula", and like magic they all looked perfect, with my suffix and no extra zero! BUT, I could not get a single dimension to do this, nor could I "Match Properties" and make another string behave correctly. And now when I enter a new string of dimension it does not show the suffix. Even when I "Edit Witness Line" and add to the perfect string of dims, the newly added dims don't have the suffix. Very interesting.

For Rough Opening (R.0.) dimension, specifically, you can put "R." in the alternative unit prefix, a dot "." on the alternative unit suffix, and keep the alternative unit rounded at a billion or so. After that, the "R." will come before the "zero" and end with "." The end result will look like this: "4' 3 1/2" R.0."

This is a great work around. I also used a similar method, faking the Zero character to appear in the phrase as an alphabetical "O". I wanted a dimension string for measuring to studs. The dimensions have the suffix "0N FACE OF STUD", whereby the "O" in the word ON, is actually the non-hideable zero.

Is there a suggestion for "VIF" or "CLR" ?

Revit came out in 2008, and now is 2021, 13 years without solution, lol.

I don't have v2022 to tell this is the fix, but what you have shown there is not by a separate type, it will change all dimensions to vif and clr...

Of course they are by type. Below are 4 different types.

This worked in my Revit 2021:

Add dimension, double-click on text.  A Dimension Text dialog box displays options to add text fields.

That method works on dimensions individually, but if I wanted to have a dimension Type that always said "NTS" for example, there is no space for suffix in the type properties. Although it offers an Alternate Unit Suffix, interestingly enough.

It looks like Revit 2022 has solved this for us. Thank you.

Exactly @ToanDN, except my text Type Properties box looks like this

How did you get those simple prefix and suffix fields that answer the question?

Ah, I see - the feature was added for Revit 2022.
