Dimension tick mark

I created a dimension type that will use a different tick mark for centerlines. However, how do I get this tick mark to show up for grid lines, since typically grid lines are centerlines. I found a work around to dimension to the center reference plane for the actual column, however our structural models are usually linked in and this does not seem to work.

Are you dimensioning to the grid line with your new dim style? I'm not sure what you mean by getting them to show up for grid lines. Please elaborate (with screenshots if possible) Thanks!

So I created the dim style that uses a filled dot when dimensioning to centerlines. However, I want the centerline tick to show up when I dimension to the actual grid line.

The attached picture shows what I want, but I am faking it by dimensioning to the center reference plane of the column, not the grid line. This workaround will work for plans but in other views, such as sections, it won't work unless the column is shown in the view.

On top of this, the dim style doesn't seem to recognize center reference planes in linked models. This is an issue because our structural models are linked models from consultants.

You could copy monitor the columns from the structural link to your project. Set the copy monitor to replace the column types with a custom type that contains no geometry, only center reference planes. Now, you can place the dimensions to the 'invisible' columns to show the special tick marks.

This will work only if the family is visible in the view. When we have wall sections/details cut where there is no column or structure visible, I need to be able to dimension off of the grid line itself. It seems like it should be fairly easy to make grid lines read as centerlines so the centerline tick mark appears.

You can also copy monitor the grids from the structural model which will show up in any view.

Yes, I understand that. But the issue is that dimensions do not recognize grid lines as centerlines and will not automatically apply the centerline tick mark when attaching dimensions to grid lines.

Unfortunately Revit will only view the center of a component as a centerline, not a grid annotation. I can point you to the Revit Ideas community to post your idea, and others that see value in this improvement can vote on this to be implemented in a future release.

Grid lines are commonly used for column centers but not always. They can be used for many other non-center conditions such as faces of facade, faces of stud, etc...

To address the issue of not being able to dimension to 'invisible' columns, you can add a small model line along the axis of the column in the family, and set it to Invisible object style.  That way, you can snap to the center reference plane of the column family in section/elevation.
