When I am adding details to a floor plan such as: floor joist direction/span direction, Ive been just using detail lines to show layout and span direction. I'm sure there's a "Revit" way to do it, I just havent found it yet.

if i place joists like that... using the beam option in the structure tab... (which i havent been doing..) what then..? how'd you get that "2 x 12 " notation?

ok... I've created a detail component (directional arrows) with a generic annotation built in (text label). It all works really well. I can place it....stretch it... and rotate it... but the text is not locked to the center. What did I do wrong? You can see in my picture, I placed the detail component three times with varied length... but the text remains the same distance from the left end (insertion point).

that worked perfect... I didnt realize that the symbol had a centerline reference to align to. Partly, i overlooked this because up until now, i was using a text label instead of that symbol... and I couldnt figure out how to align the text label to anything.
One other question if you can.... in that file, I was having trouble figuring out how to move the "rotation" point from the center of the arrow out to the insertion point. I achieved this by placing a reference line off to the left... I have no idea why that worked, but it did... surely there's a better way.

what i want is the rotation point to be the same as the insertion point... by default, the rotation is the center line... and I dont see an adequate control whereby i can change it.
Even the way it is though... this saves me a ton of time during detailing... you dont want to know what I was doing before.

Try this one. The Tick Marks are an Generic Annotation Family. They will behave like Text (e.g. they will maintain their Sheet Size no matter View Scale). Set TYPE Parameter "Tick Size". Also, Label Offset is controlled via Parameter and will be draggable (via Shape Handles) in Project per Instance.
The level of help and guidance that I have received through this forum has been a tremendous help to me.... So much so that I have found a way to pay it forward. I started teaching an online "YOU CAN LEARN REVIT" class last week, no charge. I have students ranging from 8th grade to 65 yrs old across the country. Some will eventually find their way here to this forum. When they get here... tell them I'm lost.
