Custom Color Schemes - Room Name Glitch

I think I've found a glitch in color schemes, hopefully someone has the solution so I don't to constantly manage this.

So, we've created custom color schemes (changed the default colors) by room name and have applied them to multiple views.  Great. Now, when someone goes to edit a different color scheme we are losing all of the custom inputs and it's reverting back to default colors.  I've made a couple of realizations here:

1.  When using the properties palette to adjust the color scheme you are limited by view to using the applicable category color schemes and there is no issue.

2.  The only schemes affected seem to consistently be created with "Room Names".

2.  When using the tool ribbon to adjust color schemes you have the option to use all categories available for color schemes obviously.  When you navigate to a random category of color scheme and then back to rooms, the room name color scheme has completely lost custom color inputs.

I've tested this on multiple projects and the issue is the same.  The only way we can edit our color schemes without losing the custom inputs on the room name scheme we have to edit them from properties palette.

Thoughts?  This is incredibly annoying because team members constantly want to make changes through the ribbon and we are having to spend time fixing it every time.

Maybe I am missing a step, but I can not replicate what you are referring to (Revit 2016).

When using the properties pallete or the ribbon I am presented with the same window.

Are you doing something differently? Other Revit version?

When I change other color schemes it does not influence my room name color scheme (with modified colors).

Only when I try to change the parameter for the room name to something else I get an issue. However before that I am warned of the situation like this:

Maybe you can make a screencast so we can see exaclty what is going on and try to replicate it?

Okay this is what I’m doing exactly:

1. Started a new file in Revit 2016 (I also done this in 2014 with same results)
2. Created a few area plans and populated with areas/area boundaries
3. Created a new color scheme; Rentable Area by Name
4. Customized color scheme so that all names were the same color for clarity (purple).
5. Applied color scheme to multiple views.
6. Opened the color schemes editor through the ribbon
7. Navigated to Areas (Rentable) – If I open the color scheme editor through the properties palette the editor opens directly to Areas (Rentable) and there is no issue.
8. Colors are reverted back to default and if I hit okay I lose my customization.

You can see the colors I chose in the first attached image at step 4.  The second image was taken at step 7 where you can see the colors do not match the plan behind it that included the custom colors. 

As I said, I’ve tested this multiple times now on Revit 2014 and 2016 and am having the same issue. It seems to only happen when I set the scheme definition by NAME.

I tried to replicate what you described and the color scheme never resets unless the default scheme definition has been changed (as noted by @L.Maas). This might be silly but do you usually work with the default Scheme Category "Rentable Area"? Or do you create your own?

If you are using/applying the default Scheme category to all views - The Proposed Solution:

1. Create a new Category say "Area Rentable - Type 1" customize it and apply it to whichever views...

• When you access the color scheme from the Ribbon - it opens to the default color scheme
• When you access the color scheme from the properties palette - it opens to the one applied to the view
• Hence, if you are using a custom category and u open color scheme from the ribbon it will by default open the OOTB "Rentable Area" category which in this case you can do whatever changes (intentionally or unintentionally) without affecting the custom scheme "Area Rentable - Type 1" applied to the views. The issue with Color Schemes through Ribbon is that one wouldn't expect it to affect the views but it does when all views are set to the default OOTB category....

Thanks for the reply.  I wish I could create a video to show exactly what's happening as you didn't quite capture everything.  But yes, I was customizing the default scheme category and when I created new color scheme types the issue went away.  It still feels like a glitch to me that the default scheme would revert back to original colors after customization.

When the customized "default or original" color scheme type is applied to a view and you click on color schemes from the ribbon it was opening to 'Spaces schema 1", not the rentable area default scheme.  When I then navigate to the customized 'default or original' color scheme it has lost it's customization.  Again, if I just create a new color scheme there doesn't seen to be an issue.

I'm having what I think is the same issue. I was trying very hard to send an email report but can't seem to find where to do that (Really, Autodesk?), so here I am.

The issue is this; If I open a plan with a color scheme applied, all looks good, and when I open the "Edit Scheme" dialog on this view, it is correct.

Likewise, if I open the Edit Color Scheme dialog via the Rooms & Areas Tab, it looks correct.

However, if I navigate away from this launch window (this is what opens when I first select "Color Schemes" from the Rooms & Area menu), and come back, it seems to reset all of my settings.

Example:

Here, all I did was navigate to the "Rooms" Category, select another scheme, but not change anything (so it changes the display window)

Then, when I navigate back to the original Area plan it launched in, all the colors have been changed.

If I don't navigate back, and simply hit "OK" in the Room color scheme, the settings don't change in the Area color scheme.  As soon as I navigate back to the Area color scheme, it's reset - and with the "Room" values now populating my Area plan values.

Thoughts? It seems that by editing the color scheme via the view vs. the "Rooms & Areas" tab seems safer, but still not a guaranteed way to keep my customized schemes from going wonky. But this is still troublesome, especially when working on a team.  It shouldn't matter where it is edited.

I'll try to get a screencast of the behavior...
