Curved Mansard Roof

Hello,

 

I am currently trying to create a curved mansard roof, and was wondering if I could get some tips. I have tried roof by footprint, roof by extrusion, creating an in place mass, and am wondering why when I created an in place component- roof, it does not read as a roof when I am trying to cut dormers out. I appreciate any help I can get.

 

I have attached a photo of the roof that I am trying to create for reference.

Create an in place mass, then use Roof by Face tool to create the roof from the mass faces.

I tried that, but it does not register the curved sides as faces, only the flat top and bottom

create roof by extrusion, but create 4 parts corresponding to each direct then join them once they are modelled

Is there a way to cut the extrusion? I tried to create a roof by extrusion as the length of the roof and then the front curve and back curve, but without cutting the extra part of the extrusion on either side off, it doesn't accomplish the shape I need it to.

You could cut each extrusion with 2 cylinder voids at the ends.  

 

By the way, I have no issues with creating a curved Mansard roof by face.

select the roof extrusion to go to 3d view top, Select vertical from modifying roof options for openings and use voids for sides.

No. Create the voids as in place generic models, use Cut geometry to cut the roof with the voids WHILE you are inside the in place model editor.

Can you explain how you created that? When I started it, I created a box using the in place mass, and voided it as necessary to get the curves. When I tried to make a roof by face using that method, it did not let me select the curved faces, only the top and bottom of the initial box that I had created and voided.

In-Place Mass Form created by drawing lines shown highlighted in red, selecting them all and picking  "Create Form":

Roof by Face created by selecting 4 surfaces of in-place Mass and pressing "Create Roof".

I'd rather use the Sweep for an entire Profile, either for:

  1. Component >Model in Place >Roof
  2. or a Mass Element and Roof by Face

as in my screencasts:

This video does not explain things very well in working through this in place mass process.  You are laying out some reference planes in plan view and then you locate an center reference plane that you name XY in the center of your rectangular model lines.  You then go to a elevation view to draw the curved part and somehow select on the XY reference plane.   When I do this and go to elevation view and select the XY reference, the dialogue comes up asking me to select a view that is not the front elevation view I was in to use to draw this curve, something your video does not show at all.  Maybe I am doing something wrong but I can't seem to locate that issue based on this video.  I think I'll try the sweep.

I just wanted chip in to express my gratitude here: thank you so much @ToanDN !!

I tried void sweeping the life out of a truncated hip roof to no avail.. Luckily I stumbled upon this thread, and your screencast did just the trick. It's not every day a client specifies a concave mansard roof, but luckily Revit has an app for that- thank you again! 🙂
