Why do I get this error messages and what is the correct way? I am trying to edit a curtain wall - storefront to make a metal panel curtain wall.

You cannot pick the same name as the curtainwall type. So switch system panel or wall.

I see. I didn't realize that is the one I just created.  But they shouldn't show up there, should they? This is for material of curtain panel, all listed there to be chosen from should be glazed panel, spandrel etc; just like to choose mullion material, the system family type is not a choice listed there.  Misleading.

Yea the Curtainwall panel cannot reference to itself. So I would create a new curtainwall type and then set that as your curtain panel.

So curtain wall and curtain wall panel are the same thing? I only see curtain wall panel family template not curtain wall family.

Curtainwall is a system family. This is where it can host curtainwall panel, system panel, wall or curtainwall as their panel.

Curtainwall panel - your own created family

System panel - Revit default panel from OOTB (IE: Empty, Solid & Glaze)

There is a different between curtainwall panel and system family. System family allows you to conform to any shape when you edit curtainwall profile. Curtainwall panel requires to be straight and will not allow any custom shape profile.

Now I have the custom panel that I want to use, but the problem is I am going to use it on a wall of non-rectangular shape,  it kept telling me it can't be used due to the shape.

Sadly custom curtainwall panel will not allow you to conform to weird shape. So you have to built in those weird shape into the curtainwall panel family and keep the curtainwall as straight. Can you provide screenshot what you want to achieve.

Yes, here is the wall I want to model with the curtain panel ; I have  the ribbed metal panel family but not perforated, I still need to make it perforated.

Where can you change the material in Type Properties?  The system panel is not editable either..

Select a panel type then you can edit it.

Yes, I can edit the system panel material. How I can make the things behind it visible? I change it to glass, but it doesn't work.

Create a filter by the curtain panel type name, add it to the view and override it to be transparent.

How to edit the material to make it a horizontally corrugated and perforated panel? Are the below settings correct?

The rendering doesn't show any texture.

Hmm...have you consider using mullion? See attached what you can do.
