Is it possible to create family elements that dont cut through a wall?

I am creating a generic wall based family and just want to cut through the outer layer of brickwork and not through the hole structure. What is the best way to model this?

At the moment i have shown an opening and then created the same wall build-ups within the family. I was wondering if there is a better way to model recessed features into walls.

A couple of ways:

1. use a void in the family to cut the wall, at the precise depth you want. Add the void in the family, save, load into project, place the family, then use Cut Geometry.

2. Create a "niche"--using a trick of creating a "frameless window". Open and existing window family, save-as, and delete everything except the opening cut and the reference linse, dimensions/parameters, save, load into project, then place on the wall. You can adjust the size as needed.

3. Use an in-place Void family to cut the wall.

I'm assuming that you already know that reveals don't do your design intent. That said, you can create a family with a void attached to reference planes and parameter controlled.

You won't be able to automatically read the exterior finish thickness, but you can set it by parameter (instance or type, depending on your design intent).

Important: the void family will work only if you cut the generic wall in the family template, and check the parameter "Cut with voids when loaded".

Hope it helps
