Creating families - who to follow?

We are literally just about to start down the road with Revit.

Having a look at the existing available families from the likes of Autodesk, NBS, BIMobject, BIMstore etc. etc., they all seem to create doors, windows etc. with different levels of detail & number of parameters.

Given that we'll be usually using the model to create views at about 1:50 (metric), can you advise on where we can go for inspiration & follow good practice?

This is a good resource to start with - there are a number od documents as well as the families guide (while it was for older releases the majority of information still applies):
