Creating a parametric door family with visibility options

Hello, I wonder if anyone can assist me

I have been trying to create a door family that includes visibility options for side lights. (Windows either side of the door)

I have managed to model these and they work well with regards to turning the visibility on/off and both have an additional parameter to change the side lights width.

The problem I have is that the wall opening does not account for side screens, I thought I could use a void extrusion with the same visibility parameter to create the additional opening when the side lights are visible but Revit does not allow this, how can I achieve what I am after?

...my second thoughts were to try create a formula for the opening width? (this is new to me and not a function I have previously used) If visibility on + side screen width. Is this the correct approach? If so can anyone please help me with how to create a working formula any advice would be welcome

  • Thank you!!

can you post the family for us to look at?

off the top of my head you would need to add a parameter for Total Width and tie it to the Opening Cut of the door family.

Why don't you nest the Wall-Hosted sidelights into the Door Family and associate them to Visibility Parameters. When they are turned off, so is their Opening Cut.

There is no good reason to bundle everything into one family in this case. But if you insist, create a door family for each configuration and nest them in a master door family, then create a Family Type parameter to create a dropdown menu to select Type in lieu of a Yes/No box.
