Counting Model Groups

Holy sh!t Revit, could it be any harder to count instances of model groups???

I've seen workarounds for placing 'obscure object type' and scheduling that...  this approach stinks and is anti-bim

I also read about 'Model Review' add-in being able to do it, but that tool/interface is as obtuse as I could possibly imagine.  Does anybody have this working? And might be willing to post their  .BCF file?

Anybody else have suggestions?

yep, v2016.

I tried Dynamo too, but couldnt find the right mojo to get a list from it either.

Good to know they improved it in 2018, just doesnt help me much at the moment.

Cheers.

What exactly does that stinking approach suggest?

We are MEP engineers, so it's extraordinarily unlikely that we'd have a legitimate need for 'plantings' in our model, so that approach would suggest we create a planting family with a type for each 'unit type', then place the appropriate planting type into the group definition, then when you need to know the quantities of the groups, you actually make a schedule of the 'plantings types' and include 'Count' (and uncheck 'itemize each instance').

Its a tolerable workflow, but it assumes that I'm in control of those groups, but when they come from the architect, I am not. Anyways, it seems the issue is fixed in 2018, so that's cool.

Actually, I use categories this way in a couple workarounds as well. Mine is "Nurse Call Devices".  Not ideal, but effective.

It is a legitimate workflow for pre-2018.  if you need to count linked groups, just boss the architect to do the same.

Hopefully this is relevant to your question - can't you just right click to 'select all instances' of a model group and check your properties for the number of those instances?
