Convert AutoCAD models into Revit?

Dear colleagues

I would like to convert 2D drawings in AutoCad,a ground floor and first floor drawings, into 3D rendered Autodesk Revit for visualization purposes and to see how the 2D drawings would look. I have the ceilings and floors etc in the 2D drawings, please advise...

Two possible options (there could be more):

1) Start from scratch in Revit.

2) If you want to see the building envelope (exterior side of the
exterior walls and roof), look into an easier workable program
such as Sketchup.

A direct conversion from 2D would be magical but I'm afraid it is not possible. There is a lot of information missing from a 2D drawing that is absolutely necessary for 3D.

I do not understand the reply to the gentleman who wanted to convert a CAD drawing to Revit, by saying start the drawing over in Revit??? The whole point of the question was he did not want to have to redraw it.

Hi @Anonymous,

It is quite easy to insert or link AutoCAD drawing files into Revit. However, they are just flat representations of geometry.  In Revit you can bring in the drawing and then create Revit objects such as floors , walls, doors, etc. by directly drawing right on top of the drawing.

If you need specific steps, the REVIT forum is the place to ask.

You can only link or import Autocad dwg files as a guide and use it to place or sketch Revit Objects to create a 3d model.
