Connecting RevIT client to cloud-based server

What are the options (best practices) for connecting a RevIT client to a cloud-based RevIT Server?  Is it possible to point the client to a cloud-based server, if so how?  Do we have to use Autodesk's A360 collaboration utility or can we do this without that tool? I'm new to this, so keep it simple please.  🙂

Collaboration for Revit (A360) is the only method that will work within Revit.

Using shared networks like OneDrive or DropBox will just cause issues and dissapointment, not to mention corrupt project files.

So each person that will work on a project on A360 will need to have a C4R license.  You do not need a license if all you are doing is uploading a model for reference only. (Working local on a company network)

I'm not wanting to use Dropbox or anything like that.  Simply connecting a local client to a web-based server that hosts RevIT Server.  Or the other option is to have both my server and client in the cloud.  I assume that this would probably work, but I wanted to reach out to see what other options were avaialble.  My final option would be to have a local server and local client, but we really don't have the budget to build up this kind of infrastructure.  We're a really small shop and this is only a two-year project.

Other thoughts?
