I've just set up work sets in a project so that multiple staff can access and work on the model at the same time. However I'm wondering if there is a way to set user permissions?

For example, some of our staff need to be able to see the full model so that they can take dimensions and create sheets, but they shouldn't be able to modify the 3D model at all. Can this be done with work sets? is there another way of controlling this?

Thanks,

Short answer is NO. And worksets were/are not intended for user access control

I would recommend that the people who only need to take dimensions should try using Revit in Revit viewer mode. And just leave sheet creation to modelers who modify and work on the model and detailing of sheet bound elements. Or they can use the online viewer that comes with your software package.

Ah ok, I'm very new to work sets but If I have understood them correctly, they allow multiple users to work in the same project at the same time but on different aspects of the project.

So, I have split our model down into the following work sets (to begin with);

  • Work set 1 (The original/master file which we don't use)
  • Exhaust ducting
  • All other ducting

If I want to make a change to the exhaust ducting I open a new local file, and open the exhaust ducting work set.

However sometimes I may want to see all other ducting to make sure I haven't moved the exhaust ducting to a position where it is now clashing. But If another user is working in the all other ducting work set, then I can't open it to view it?

I have also heard that any coordination models should be split into individual work sets also. But this would create the same problem as above. Multiple people working in the model may need to view these coordination model work sets at the same time, but if another user has them open no one else can see them.

Am I missing a trick here?

I believe you are confusing worksets with something else.

  • You can define whether specific worksets should be opened and which should be visible in all views.

  • You do not need to open a new local or to view elements of other worksets you can customize worksets visibility per view under visibility graphics >> Worksets ....
    1. You would have a workset for each type of duct (example: Exhaust, Fresh Air, ...etc)
    2. What you referred to as workset 1 would be a View which has all worksets opened
    3. Then you would have separate views for the various type of Ducts where in each of these views only the relevant workset is visible while all the rest are hidden
  •
