Chainlink fence linetype

I am trying to bring in the fence linetype as we saw it in AutoCAD, the one that looks like this - 

----X----X----X----X

or

----0----0----0----0

I did read on an earlier post that it is possible to import a .dwg into a drafting view, explode it, and voila! The linestyles are where you want them to be. I wish it was that simple. I set up the lines in different layers, named them per the linetype that I wanted to bring over, brought them into a drafting view which was scaled to 1:1, etc etc etc - all I got were dashed lines without the lovely Xs and Os that my Landscape guys want. 

Is this possible at all? If so, how?

You cannot explode these kinds of linetypes from AutoCAD to Revit and maintain the visual fidelity.  There are better options for Revit:

- Repeating detail component

- Curtain wall with generic annotation symbol nested in mullion or panel family (see attached for an example)

Or now that you mention it, possibly a line-based detail component. I just wanted to exhaust all possibilities before going on to the family approach. Thank you!

Line based detail component is another good approach. But similar to repeating detail components, them details are view dependent.

This does not work.  No symbols appear.  No parameters to show or define a symbol / letter.

It works in Revit 2023 - 

There is a nested detail component that controls the 'x' symbol-so unlike CAD this is a bit more steps. Note that in 3D, it does not look like a fence.

the "X" are not showing up in my model. how can you adjust them?

Let me answer some of the questions, If you open "General Annotation" in your view template. It will show up.
