Center windows in split walls.

Hello everyone,
I have created a Revit family. I don't have much experience in creating Revit families. Hopefully this community can help me. In projects I break up the walls. The structural walls are separated from the finishing. My window family cuts nicely through the different walls. The window automatically centers itself in the selected wall. In my case that is usually the structural wall. I would like to automatically center the window in the structural wall and finish together. What should I change or add to the family?

I don't think this would be possible automatically on placement as even dynamo would have to be run after the fact to adjust the location of the window.

There may be a plugin that has this functonality but I am unaware of any.

Your best option is to introduce an offset parameter in your window to adjust its location relative to on of the host wall faces.

The attached image shows how this can be done. The red line shows a reference plane which is locked to the wall face using a 0 dimension and locking the dimension. The blue line is the face of the window and all other reference planes are associated to that plane. Inset from Exterior is an Instance parameter so every window can have a different inset based on wall thickness and finish. In project you would have to figure out exactly what value you would need for that parameter to center the window in your case.

Not sure what you mean by "centering in wall", but I did notice that the windows weren't cutting through both walls.

To cut through both walls, you need an unattached Void in the Family that is deep enough to penetrate other walls - AND, you need to check the "Cuts with void when loaded" checkbox in the Family.  In the Project, you would then manually cut the other wall types in the build-up  by using the Cut Geometry tool on the Modify Tab.

  • Create a curtain wal type with a basic wall type (any type) as default panel.
  • Place a curtain wall (same size as your window) and cut both walls with it to create opening.
  • You can move the curtain to the center (or any point if you want) of the two walls.
  • Place your window in the wall panel and done.

I meant the center of both walls together. The windows don't cut because the walls aren't joined.

Thank you for your contribution. I think this solution would result in an incorrect materials list.

No it wouldn't.

I think you may have misunderstood me. Even when the Walls are Joined, the top Window doesn't penetrate through both Walls.  That's because there's nothing in the Family to cut a Wall in that direction. Maybe you just oriented that Window incorrectly in your example RVT.  Dunno.
