Cant see stringer extension in plan

Hi all,

For context I am working in Revit 2025, as I know features have been removed from stringers over the years.

When I enable the "Horizontal Cut" option in the "Lower End Cut" instance parameter of an individually selected stringer, I am unable to see the extended portion of stringer when in plan view, unless the stair is selected and highlighted. I have checked my view range and tried using a plan region (I would prefer to avoid this if possible). I have also tested this in a fresh project with the default template to make sure it's not just my file (the attached images are from this fresh file).

I do not want to model an object in place to account for this, make a custom or railing to replace the stringer or use a face based family to replace the lost section. The stair in my project is already utilizing a number of unorthodox solutions to other problems, and I fear these solutions will only further complicate an already overly-complicated model.

I have not been able to find anyone else discussing this specific issue. Am I just missing an obvious setting? Is there an unorthodox work around? Is this a bug with no reasonable workaround that autodesk will ignore for the next two presidential election cycles? I need some help!

Great finding!!!

I used 2026 (latest build) and the same issue persists.

However, my testing revealed a few things.

First, the stringers become visible if you change the view display to 'Shaded' or below. Only 'Hidden' or Wireframe don't show it.

I turned Shadows ON (in both views) to see what does or doesn't cast a shadow. This is a trick I learned from the Autodesk support team when they investigate such issues 😁

Do you see something interesting here?

This is leading me to believe that the sides of the stringer are NOT visible in a plan view.

I will have to continue later. Maybe make my own custom stringer, force stringers to always be shown as 'shaded' or maybe even try the Linework tool to possibly force it to show.

Basam,

Thank you for your thorough investigation! Unfortunately using shaded view type or enabling shadows only reveal the stringer extension, not its linework (they also conflict with our firms plan graphic standards). Additionally the edge of the stringer lacking linework will not respond to the linework tool. How frustrating!! My whole goal in this endeavor is to extend the stringer 2" passed the first stair tread. The cleanest strategy so far has been to use a generic mass family (not modeled in place) and clean join it to the horizontally cut stringer. When mass visibility is disabled in the "Massing & Site" tab and the V/G settings, it effectively acts as a boolean difference for the desired object  if the mass is clean joined correctly. I then lock a vertical reference plane (perpendicular to the stair run direction) to the "cut" stringer end, and host a work plane based generic model family to that reference plane as a "cap" to the stringer. Perhaps I will have to use symbolic lines in the "cap" generic model family to account for the missing stringer linework. I will post an update with attachments if this succeeds for those who come after.
