Cannot upgrade Revit 2022 file to 2023

I have a Revit 2022 file that I am trying to upgrade to Revit 2023. The file opens fine in 2022, but when trying to open it with 2023, there is an error message. "Revit encountered a serious error. The current action could not be completed. Try auditing the file in the most recent version of Revit. If the problem persists, check online help for more information."

I have audited the file and Revit 2023.1 is installed. There are no other updates for 2023.

When you get the error/warning message do you see a button to Expand to see more details?

No. And the troubleshoot serious errors link was no help.

can you post the Journal file for the last time you got this message?

not sure that's the correct journal file. if you are opening a file and getting that message right away it should be a small file. 

• Close revit
• open the file in 2023, to record the error
• accept the error and let it crash.

then after Revit closes, go look for the journal file in the previously listed path for 2023 and pick the most recent one :-).

it looks like the file is opening? you get this message, pick Close and the file continues to open?

Are you working on or with files stored on the Cloud? BIM360/ACC/DOC's, etc...?

I wish I could share the file but I cannot, but it just closes when I accept the error. Does not continue to open. I wish it would, I might be able to find the element causing this issue. 

The file was a workshared file in Revit Server 2022, I took it out, detached it from central, I even discarded the worksets. and I still get this message when opening in 2023.

I took several files out of Revit Server and converted them to 2023 and had no problem, but this one does. 

Just using a local drive.

Open the file in 2022, go through Manage > Warnings and try to fix as many as you can, then open it again in 2023.

open it in 2022 and remove any links. In the journal file it looks like the issue happens after it tried to identify various links (...Building_Renovation-Electrical, ...Building_Renovation-Mechanical, ...Building_Renovation-Architectural and a "...Architectural_test" file)

There are a lot of errors.

I had no idea. This file was created by someone else a while ago. Before me.

Everything is grayed out. Show, Mor Info, Delete Checked.

• were you able to go thru and address all there errors/warning as @ToanDN mentioned?

• Did you try removing all the links prior to upgrading to 2023?

I took out the links and it still has the same problem. Where is the journal file did you find the error?

line 3205 - 3221

• line 3205 is where "Revit encountered a serious error..."
• line 3208, 09, 12 & 13 list the links
• lines 3219-3221 is where is where "Close" button was selected.

Wading in, you've already got some quality help here... try, look for the following:

• Purge unused (Revit doesn't like some families (constraint issues) during an upgrade and will "complain")
• Eliminate groups if any, un-group them all and purge again
• Design options, if any can you accept primary? Eliminate them.
• In-place families...massing or otherwise?
• Remove linked models, and DWG imports/links
• Remove views not on sheets
• Warnings? Resolve as many as possible, especially attachment, join geometry, boundary, identical instances etc.
