Cannot Restore Excluded Element From Group

There is little information that I have found regarding this issue. Some solutions people have are simply to ungroup and re-group. This has to be a last resort as doing this would require re-labeling 10+ group instances spread thorough-out the sheets within the project. There is one forum post I have found that is unresolved but explains my exact issue except with a railing that I assume was hosted to a stair landing. I have attached the screenshot of the forum post and the error message I get when I try to restore the group instance.

Thank you in advance!

I’ve seen this (or very similar) behavior in Revit before. In fact many “can’t-restore excluded group members” threads seem to share your exact error:
Based on what I and others have observed, here’s a breakdown of why this happens — and what to try before resorting to ungroup/re-group (since as you said that means re-labeling 10+ group instances, which is a pain).

I’ve seen this issue in Autodesk Revit and it’s not a bug per se — it’s a limitation of Revit’s group/host logic when you deal with complex geometry (like stairs + railings + landings + nested groups). The error

"Not all of the excluded members … were fully restored"

What to try before ungroup/re-group

Use “Restore All Excluded Members” on sub-groups, not just the parent group — if your stair/railing assembly is nested.

If that fails — try manually restoring via TAB-select on the ghosted geometry, then right-click → “Restore Excluded Member.”

Check if missing elements were “hosted” (e.g. railing on landing slab). If the host got excluded or relocated, Revit may not be able to re-host, so it refuses to restore.

If none of that works, and you have many group instances (as you say), then yes — ungroup and re-group may be the only reliable long-term fix.

Well, I tried to recreate your problem — in a simpler form, using basic walls and doors. As you can see in the picture below, the same issue appears, and the solution is exactly the same: create a new host, rebuild the group, and then modify it.

Thank you for the response! I do think this would solve a majority of instances where this issue occurs, however, it seems more complex than this. It is a railing that is hosted to a stair landing, and the stair landing at some point got moved, deleted, and/or replaced (it is a shared file so many people have access to it). I tried replacing the host but there is no way to know if it is in the right spot.

For better or worse we basically found a small workaround that allowed us to keep one instance of the group (deleted the rest) and then made the change to the group. Then just copy and paste the group where it needed to go. Still have to re-label a lot but it gives me a job to do (just started at an architecture firm and I am still new to many things).

I did come across one solution which I did not get to test, but basically if I "edit" the group (i.e. open the group up as its own Revit project), delete the ghosted railing, then save the group as a project, then I can reload the group in my original project. Not sure if it work but curious.

This is actually extremely informative thank you so much. I basically went through the checklist that you supplied, and I do believe that the "right" solution is to simply "do it right the first time" which implies that If I delete anything in a group, make sure it was not connected to a host, especially if I excluded beforehand. My other comment in this post explains what ended up happening, but this is a great explanation and series of steps to go through for this sort of situation.

Yes, this method will work, and there was no need to delete the other groups either. This was actually my second suggestion — and if you’re familiar with it, it will solve your problem.

Create a new, clean group in another file and save it.

In the current file, go to the Groups section and replace the existing one by reloading the new clean group.
