Can total areas be generated based on color scheme?

I am working on a project with multiple different floor types, and using a color scheme to designate between them.

I need to determine the total area covered by each floor type, and since the scheme is already set up, is there a way to use that to determine quantity. 

For example, if there are rooms with carpet, others with tile, or whatever. Can it tell me there is XXX many square feet of carpet, and XXX square feet of tile in the project?

Yes. A color scheme use a parameter to group colors. You can use the same parameter to sort/group your schedule and add a footer to show the subtotals.

make a schedule and sort by floor finish and don't itemize instances.
