Can't Rotate Simple Family

I've attached a simple RVT file with a family inserted and the front view active.  I need to rotate the family 90 degrees but Revit reports the following error:

"Can't draw because Work Plane is at a very sharp angle in this view. Go to another view or redefine the Work Plane."

What have I done wrong? (PS having a BAD couple of Learning Revit days grrrrrr!!!!)

Your entity was made as a Generic Model ....locked to a Level..

It was much better to made it as Generic Model Face Based....

In order to can rotate the family element in the present situation:

  • in Family Editor> Properties > check Work Plane-Based and load it back into the project..
  • Into the Project : Draw a new Refence Plane at the desired angle, call it somehow, let'say plane A
  • In plan view :select the object (1) > Work Plane (2) > pick New (3)
  • Placement Plane >select Reference Plane A (4)

OK, thanks, got it now.  My problem was that my family (despite being from the generic template) needed a work plane or a face to orient itself with.  Still, the rotate command should create a new work plane for you - it would have saved me a couple of hours of frustration.
