Can't drag Sweep's Profile or make it move with the structure

Hi everyone,

 

I am designing a very complex structure in the family environment (the family is parametric) and for that I had to use sweeps. But I am finding problems in having the sweeps to move the way I want them to move whenever I adjust the length of the panel. 

So, I decided to enter the edit mode to lock the sweep to the reference planes or extrusions, that might make it work to move the way I expect.

 

I then came to a point in which I believe that if I move the profile to the horizontal part of the path (highlighted in yellow in the image bellow) I might be able to lock the planes in the right place. Because this angled profile is causing the sketch to move in  a very awkward way make it impossible to lock to the reference planes I want.

Do any of you guys have any idea of how I could solve it?

Locking path to the edges of an extrusion is ok...more or less as good as reference planes. The thing is, if you have already finished the sweeps, you can no longer move the profile to another segment of the path. The workflow is as flows

  1. The profile's XY workplane is placed of the FIRST segment of the path (so when you pick edges you need to keep in mind to start with the most convenient segment)
  2. This XY workplane can be moved to another segment of the path ONLY before you finish the Sweep (simply by select and drag)
  3. Once you finish the sweep, if you re-edit it you will not be able to move the XY workplane

This doesn't mean you need to recreate all the sweeps if all are already done. you can always (90% of the cases) create an orthogonal view to the XY workplane or Use the workplane Viewer

  • To create an orthogonal view, place a section parallel to that XY plane (you will have to place the section Vertical then use rotate to make it parallel to the Profile's XY workplane

Hi Yara,

 

It seems like, you can't lock the profile with plane. My suggestion is don't lock the profile to any plane. Just create a shape whatever you want and make it group with XY reference line or plane. Now align and lock the RL or RP to the location you what to move with the panel. 

 

If you want this to act like a rope. Add one more sweep and make sure it is locked with two sides.  It will work.

Hi all,

I tried both of your approaches, but it didn't work.  To make it work I had to create 2 different sweeps for two different workplanes (reference level and extrusion) and then align the sweep from the reference level plane to the sweep hosted by the extrusion. That way I managed them both to move together and simultaneously move with the host/extrusion.

 

These workaround took me for ages to figure it out... the thing is, I didn't want to create 2 different sweeps because it makes the family size bigger (I already have a considerable big size) and since I still need to add some parametric formulas, I am afraid this 2 exquisite shapes will give me headaches to lock everything properly. But working for the moment!!

But thanks for your tips, it might work in other situation! And @RDAOU I didn't knew that the profile couldn't be changed after validation of the sketch, that was a new one and the information/video was overall very useful. Thanks!
