the family was saved as a family template (.rft) with the person and then used to create the actual family (.rfa).
Once an object is saved within a template, it cannot be removed later.

You can certainly modify an rft by changing the extension from rft to rfa, opening rfa, modifying it, saving, closing and changing extension back to rft.
I've noticed that in some families that have been changed to a template extension and back that some elements will not let us delete them anymore. It's usually reference planes that are affected (and related dimensions). I don't think it is a good idea to use the extension "trick" on families to make them family templates because you might find it impossible to make some changes to it in the future.
Hard to say about this family without having a copy of it to see ourselves.
