Black vs white

For convenience, I modeled this in place as column. Turn out the color is uneditable when I later wanted to change it to white or grey to match the base, regardless how I changed it's property.

Do you know how ? Pls spare me of redo-approach.

Edit the i  place, select the extrusion and on the properties panel associate the material to an instance parameter

Do it the same as you do with any Family. Edit the In-Place Family and add a Material Parameter of the Instance or Type kind to it, and then associate the In-Place geometry to it.
