Binding linked file: how to show the elements in correct phase

I have a project and use a former consultant's Revit file to have the building model.

They used phasing in a goofy way (they have about 6 phases and seem to have used phases as a visibility tool for AHJ sets etc.). but they do have an existing and a new phase.

When I link their file, I map the phases so that their new phase is my existing phase. and when linked, the floorplan on my existing shows exactly as needed (their new phase). But when I bind the link, the same view will show me their "Existing" model.

How do I bind the file so that the phases stay mapped like the linked file?

On previous project I didn't have that problem, but those projects only used existing and new phase. This consultant also did other goofy things (like using levels for all kind of things besides). That likely ha nothing to do with my problem, but indicates they didn't really know what they were doing.

How do I bind their link so that their new (or final) phase is my existing phase?

Binding will merge all phases. Keep it as link.

I even tried to eliminate the phases in their file, but that also will merge them. so I probably have to live with linking. I was hoping not to drag their file for ever.

when linked, I try to create a floor plan view. but it shows me all the levels in the linked model. How do i NOT see their levels but only see the ones in my project?

Highlighted are the 2 levels in my project. the others are in the linked file. How do i only "see" "my" levels when creating views?

binding essentially converts the linked model into part of your main model (group) which means it adopts the phasing settings of your project unless manually adjusted
