Bim objects not loading into revit properly

In Revit 2021.1.2, opening .rfa (Family) file opens a new instance of Revit instead of within a project that is already open. How can tweak Windows or Revit to have .rfa files open in the existing project without opening a new instance of Revit?

When you double click on RFA file, it will open up as a family editor. Inside the family editor, you can click on load into project or load into project and close the family editor.

If you don't want that to happen, then you have to click on LOAD family in the project environment.

What type of file format you download from BIMObject? Is it RVT or RFA? RVT is the project file itself. RFA is the family which you should be able to load into project. Send the link to the BIMObject you have download so we can analyze it.

the file is RFA. I haven't had issues before( ive been using it for nearly a year) but once i renewed my subscription for revit ive been struggling with this issue. it seems not to be the actual bim object but just how it is opened or loaded

Can you upload the family or send the link file?

I am not having the same issue. Is your subscription a student license or professional?

Please clarify if you are opening the RFA file by:

  1. double clicking the file in a windows explorer window or by the;
  2. open command in the current Revit sessions file menu.

And also, for each of the methods above, is a new Revit session opened?

As you have mentioned your subscription renewal, there have been problems in the past concerning the double clicking of RVT files from a windows explorer window after updating Revit which may be related to your problem. Haven't found solutions to those RVT problems though.

FWIW: In Existing Project (RVT), I can insert your Family into the Project no problem by going to the "Insert" tab, pressing "Load Family", browsing to the Folder containing the RFA and then selecting it and pressing "Open".  Of course, that only places it in the Project Browser. If I immediately follow-up by pressing  "Component=>Place a Component" (under Architecture tab), I can place an instance of the Family in the Project View.  Later I can use "Component=>Place a Component" and select the Family from the list of Families displayed in Properties Palette Preview Selector.

You need to download the file to a folder and open it via File menu in Revit (your Revit project session).   Do not double click in Window File Browser to open.  Do not open directly from the weblink.
