Best way to cut truss top chord vertically?

I need to end top chord like in the picture:

In the screenshot I used the reference plane and cut. The issue here is that if you want it to cut other 20 trusses that I copy for the rest of the building you have to copy the reference plane also. Not an issue aside from having 40 extra named reference planes.

 

The other solution was to add a Shorten modifier. But this creates inaccurate geometry when the truss is copied:

Any better way of doing it?

How is this not fixed? really. seriously. is there not someone on staff that actually builds things to be used as a resource. after much searching this is the best "fix" I've seen, but doesn't help much with an overhang.

someone should be fired.

Fix what?  Trusses are engineered. You don't "cut" trusses -- and you don't erect a bunch of them and then go back and "re-engineer" each one separately. Not in Revit. Not in the Field.

im not following... trusses are cut all the time. allowing a square or plumb cut on the end of truss should be a minimum. And having to go back and cut each truss by a reference plane is the exact definition of "re-engineering" each truss. Then applying a cut to a truss and then copying or arraying that cut truss should also be a minimum, or even allowing a cut truss in a group to be propagated. Seems pretty straight forward, and after 20 years, sounds like an easy thing to do. I think there are 3rd party programs that let you do just that... shouldn't that be the default?

or even allow a void to be created or loaded into the truss family to make such a end cut, would be nice.

The structural truss tool is more symbolic than real. If you need a more accurate representation of the truss then make a family that is modeled exactly the way you need to it be. Yes it could be parametric to allow for some variables but it doesn't have to be either. The trusses shipped to site aren't variable, they are built to location/purpose. You can take the same approach within Revit.

What country do you hail from?  Here, the building code (IRC R802.10.4 for one) prohibits altering trusses. That includes any field modification that involves the cutting.

Honestly...

if it was designed with a plumbcut

ordered with a                  plumbcut

constructed with a           plumbcut

shipped with a                  plumbcut

erected with a                   plumbcut

then the software should be able to have a plumbcut.

Heaven forbid that the structural part of the software compliment the architectural part.

this is probably why every time i ask a structural engineer if they actually use the structural part of revit they say no.

i've moved on and built a revit family that fulfills my needs, just thought that it would save time and energy to use what we bought....

wish we could reduce the price of revit if we could only buy by the part of it that actually is useful and useable.

Done.
