Best Way To Create Garden Patio/Path?

Hi,

 

I am currently working on a project that requires a garden path/patio. Initially I have used a model in place for this as I thought it to be the best method. However, the gardens are going to slope along a surface and have a fall gradient. As the path/patio will need to follow the surface gradient I then thought the best way to implement the path would be to use a sub-region. The only issue with this however is that in using a sub-region instead of a model in place the path/patio is not visible in plan views. 

 

Attached below is a quick example of how the sub-region is visible in 3D view but does not show on my plan view. Is there a way around this?

Ok quick update,

 

After messing around with the View Range settings I can now see my surface in my plan view. The only issue i'm running into is these black lines that are displayed on the surface.

The surface is flat so I don't think these are contour lines? Any help would be appreciated

Further updates lol,

 

After playing with the vg settings I have manged to rid of the black lines in my previous post. The only issue now is that I am unable to apply a surface pattern to a sub-region of a surface. 

no pattern.pngis there any way around this at all?

Surface patterns are disabled for toposurface elements. You would need to rely on color to show the different surfaces or place a filled region manually over the top of the area. Of course the filled region will only work in a 2d plan view not in 3d.

Another option would be to use a pad or a floor for this kind of thing and then you could have a surface pattern on it.

Hi, thanks for the suggestions.

 

If I were to use a pad or floor would these follow the gradient of the topographical surface? (I know I have not yet added the gradient yet but intend to do so at a later stage)

No, they would not. They are items that are "level". You can use shape editing on a floor element to manually make it match the surrounding toposurface. With a Pad, you are limited to slope arrows.

ah okay makes sense!

 

What would you advise the best method would be? Bearing in mind that following the level of the surface is of great importance.

Dynamo may be your answer.

There was a great AU class a few years back by Marcello Sgambelluri that demonstrated placing objects on a Topo surface.  Just a thought.

There are a couple of ways:

You can model a walkway that follows the toposurface quite effortlessly, however it wouldn't look too pretty if the terrain is "rough".   That is,  if there is a lot of changes in elevation along the walkway, the surface of the walkway will have a lot of those unsightly triangulations you referenced before.  However, if the elevation changes are relatively gradual it would probably be okay.   

 

Here's how:

 

1. Use the Split Surface tool the sketch your walkway boundary, and then press Finish.

2. Go to a 3D View and hide everything but the Split Surface.

3. Go to Export=>CAD Formats=>DWG.  Save just the Split Surface (not Temporarily Hidden Elements). 

4. Start an In-Place Massing session.

5. Insert CAD you just Exported into the Massing Session.  Close out. Ignore Warning. 

6. Use the Roof by Face tool to apply Roof(s) to the Mass Face. There could be many faces, depending on how triangulated the Mass is.  The finished Roof will be your walkway, so use a Roof with the thickness and materials of the walkway (i.e. 4" concrete).

 

If the resulting walkway/roof is too triangulated, grade the Toposurface/Split Surface by placing/removing points, and then repeat the above steps.
