Autocad imported dwg file not showing in Revit

Hello,

I'm trying to import a dwg into Revit and it doesn't show in any view. Could anyone give a suggestion?

I have tried pretty much everything, visibility graphics, zoom to fit view, View Range set to unlimited. Nothing really seems to work. I would appreciate if someone can explain step by step what I should do in this instance as I need to import and draw on the autocad file for a project today. Thank you in advance.

Hi @Anonymous   Thank you for posting to the forum.

This might happen for many reasons.   Here are some initial troubleshooting steps to try to isolate the problem.

Also, Which version of Revit are you using?

If you open the dwg in AutoCAD and zoom to fit, do you see the geometry?

If you import the dwg using manual center to center, do you see geometry while the mouse is hovering? (Before actually placing the dwg)

Revit project and import dwg, is it visible? Are any elements visible?

If you open the dwg in Autocad and draw a simple line from 0,0 to the top right portion of the screen, Save and then import, is that line visible?

If you can reproduce the problem in a new blank Revit file, please post the dwg file.

Thank you.

I am using Revit 2020 and  Autocad 2018. Do these have to be the same version i.e. 2020 or 2018?

If I open the dwg file in Revit and I zoom to fit I can see the geometry just fine.

If I open the dwg in Revit using manual centre to centre option, I can see no geometry while the mouse is hovering, before placing the dwg.

Import cad dwg is visible. In autocad everything is visible.

Here is the dwg file I am trying to import/link. Which version would be better, link or import?

A final question: If I manage to link/import the dwg file, how can I unload it when I finish tracing on top of it?

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

The geometry in the dwg is far away from it's origin, it's about 12km away from the origin.

Move all the geometry in the dwg to the origin, and purge the drawing (reduces about half) and save (under other name or so)

- Link the CAD don't import the CAD in a projectfile!, Use the settings below:

Link Cad settingLink Cad setting

For unloading or removing the CAD link use the Manage Link command.

Unload or Remove Cad linkUnload or Remove Cad link

- Michel

Hello @Anonymous ,

The geometry in the dwg is beyond the limits of Revit,  When it is imported the geometry is not visible because it's so far way from the Revit origin.    About the Maximum Distance Limit

The dwg can be cleaned up and prepared for use in Revit.

The main steps used to clean the data:

  1. Draw a line from 0,0,0 to the geometry.  (this gives a sense on exactly how far away the geometry is from 0,0,0.
  2. Move the geometry closer to 0,0,0
  3. Erase any extraneous data.
  4. Save As Cleaned dwg

I've uploaded a 'cleaned' dwg but please go through the process yourself because you may not intend to delete the same geometry that I did.
