Attach top/bottom - core layers only

Is there a way to use the attach top/base tool but only apply it to core layers? Or is there a better way to control what layers of a wall extend?

I have a shear wall. The studs and sheathing need to extend to the US of the roof but I want the finish layers to stop at the ceiling. In the attached screenshot I used the attach tool. The wall is attached to the ceiling on the left AND the US of the roof above. The ceiling prevents the layers to the left of the sheathing from extending beyond the desired datum, and everything to the right attaches to the roof. However, I can't seem to do this for three different attachments. The finish layer to the right does not stop and if I try to attach it to the ceiling to the right it no longer reaches the roof.

Should I be looking at unlocking layers in the section preview of the wall structure? Should I be using a stacked wall? I'd like to avoid the stacked wall but curious what the best-practices are out there.

Thanks!

Certainly.  Draw the ceiling boundary overlapping the finish layers but not the core, then attach the wall twice: first to the roof, second to the ceiling.

Thanks for the response! That works on the left side, but I want to do the same on the right side. If I try to attach the wall to that ceiling, it removes the attachment of the core to the roof. It seems like it can only handle two attachments at a time...unless I'm missing something!

Yah, I wasn't following you either. I misunderstood your question.  I bumped my post.  I see now that you are trying to stop vertical layers at different heights - as well as shape-edit the profile.  I would model different wall types and sandwich them together instead of a single compound layered wall type.

....when all else fails, just model it the way it will be constructed in the real world.  That's my mantra and I'm sticking with it. 😉

OK, thanks. That's how we've been doing it in other cases, but it can sometimes get a bit messy. I thought there might be a 'better' best-practice out there. Good to know we aren't totally off-base!

And great mantra! I'm going to use that...

Thanks again,
