Assign Material to generic model framing instance

I have downloaded a furniture piece symbol from a manufacturer's website. I am having trouble rendering this item, it will not let me paint the object (or even select it when in the paint command) or assign materials, it does not give me the option to do this. Does anyone one know how to get around this?

As I know, many families that can be found on network are dwg based families..

So:

  • select the object > Edit Familiy
  • in Family Editor > select the object - if it is "block " and in Properties is written:Import Symbol......dwg  , then the family was worked probably in AutCAD and finally imported into Revit Family.
  • if so ,look in: Manage >Object Styles >Imported Object....their will appear Category and Material - if the .dwg file was worked in layers by material.
  • I had some situations when the object was not worked , in AutoCAD, by layers on material....In such a case I have exported back the family into AutoCAD , I've made layers by material and then, finally import again into Revit Family.....

Hi

Your way seemed to me very good but it did not work on my generic model.

I export model from 3dsmax to dwg and than import as generic model in Revit.

I cannot use material on it. I tried your way and tried adding material parameter to family.

I coulnt add material or paint in any way.

Could you please help me?

The whole thing is one piece one layer so you cam only assign one material for it.  You can assign the material via Object Styles > Imports > layer 0.  But i's better to open it in CAD and create a different layer for it.

Okey, I understand we assign material acording to layer. However I can not even assign only one material. For example I tried it on wall layer and it is okey. But it didn t works on this generic model. I think i should do some changes on generic model but I cannot find what to do...

Okay.  You need to open the CAD file in AutoCAD, create a new layer and change the object to that Layer.  Then it should work.
