Architecture BEAMs and System connected. Trying to cut these elements.

Hi guys, with the project of today i'm getting nervous due to my lack of knowledge in the field.

With an entire structural beam systems in wood  , which i'm linked to work with , I've to slice all these elements between primary and secondary trying to mantain the necessary portion of structure. Until I could use Mitter and Joins I used it, but when it comes to have structural beams , even of the different familiy and same cross section, reference plane. I don't understand why the cutting geometry and void creatiion don t work both to ridefine the beam. I currently use shape different family of beam like slanted or cut but this is separetly another kind of method.

I'm waiting of a helper response.

Can you post an image of what you are trying to accomplish and further explain your situation? I don't understand what you are trying to do.

Basically as you can see from the images I have to cut a small portion of the beam which is load bearing and leave to descend those joysts but in which manner if they are structurals?

A couple thoughts. First, try using the Cope tool to make the cuts where the joists contact the beam below them. It matters which order you click with this tool: the first item you click will be the one which will be cut. You could either make a bird's mouth cut (meaning you would cut notches in the joists; this is probably what I would do) or cut notches in the beam below the joists by clicking the beam first, then each joist second.
Second, for a uniform slanted rip along the top of the beam, place a reference plane at the desired angle, then use the Cut tool to make the beam's top match the angled reference plane.

I said yes to your reply :D. Even I suppoused to use this stuff but..just in second time like joist  will work only with steel...and reference plane is such a very bright thinking which may had to use..basically there is not many explantions about that..anyway.. good point! Hi Man and good morning,  I am properly sinked on this work environments and join beams structural frames and wall . Unfortunately I can't find a way about the same joists, or load bearing beam and the wall that them covers and furthermore i noticed we cannot strech (me and my lacks of skills ;D) the notch mode to find the real cutoff beam quantity...

What do you think about these problems?

Would you post an image and further explain your difficulty? I don't understand what you are having trouble accomplishing.

i ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM when I used the reference plane: the plane it seems not complanar in the continuous lenght of the beam..previuosly drawn in section and cut normally the beam is located at the same coordinates from beginning to the end but as you can see on 3d view is irregolar cutoff.

At the second screenshot this show that the joyst is not primary of the wall even switching the wall in structural, cut the geometry off and change the wall in architectural. The command of the cutting geometry doesn t work  with the beam and wall basically.  I also post the notch as a rough   precision, ( but Is very useful for simplified scale)

Is the beam in the first image angled in two planes? If so, you will need another reference plane to cut along the second plane. The beam also looks like it is smaller on one end than on the other.

For the second image, you can use the drag buttons (the blue circles and/or the blue arrows after you select the beam) to adjust it's end position to where you want it. You can also use another reference plane at its end to cut the end at whatever angle you want. The  Cut Geometry tool must use a datum element to cut an object (such as a reference plane grid line or level). A wall is not a datum element so it will not cut the beam nor other beams. If this isn't what you're asking about please explain further.

A note on the third image: you can set the Coping Distance property to zero to make the joist sit tightly in the beam.

Hello Red. There are a couple of things I encountered with these beams.. I need to accomplish a cutoff portion of a wall within the space occupied by the beam. I get the point of the datum element, so I would consider to create an opening (in a wall but is rectangular or a generic void element , I put even air  material spliting region of the wall to give the shape of the volume of this beam as a temporary solution but I so create a new kind of wall). But not streching , its considered to be seen in a section and put in a view in the sheets has to be visible , tidy. Thank you for cope distance..

Finally, the reference planes you named are in a correct situation , cause they show in 3D the particular difference from the end one and the other but cutting the planar element on its profile section... this is the result: quite unexpected.

I report the sections and level offset proprieties.. I say should be a planar cut with one reference plane positioned in section....

I think this has gone beyond the scope of this post's question. Try posting another question on this forum to see if other people can help you; other people likely will not look at this post since it is marked as "Solved." I need to 'ask the audience' on this one.

For the record, you are correct in saying that an Opening would make an aperture in the wall where the beam is located, but unless you want precise calculations for a schedule I don't think an Opening is necessary. Placing a section so it cuts through the beam should reveal the beam clearly.

But like I said, I advise you to create a new post on here with your recent question(s).
