Hi Dear friends

Is it possible to place multiple architectural columns at the intersection of grid lines just like structural columns ? If not, what is the way around ?

Sir,

Thank you for the reply. But my question is different.

I want to know how to place the architectural/ decorative columns ?

Using a one click tool like the structural columns, no you can't .... The option to attach architectural columns to structural grids is not available (at least not in 2016)... But u can resort to other means in order to do something similar

example: one example is use arrays ... Another example is to use Dynamo which can carry out the same operation for architectural columns and place them at a set of coordinates or at grid intersections.

Why not just change the category of your architectural column family to that of structural column? Wouldn't that work?

...just tested and seems to work fine; albeit with some warnings that, right off the bat, don’t appear insurmountable to correct.

Basically, open architectural “Column” family and change its category - under “Category and Parameters” - to “Structural Column”. Reload and test.  If you get same results as I did, you should now be able to place multiples of it at grid intersections simultaneously.

Is this not the solution you were looking for?

Just remember to change the category back to the original. 🙂

Once you’ve loaded it in the project as a Structural Column, you won’t be able to re-categorize it. If you need to use it as an Architectural Column, my solution won’t work for you.

@barthbradley  what kind of problems will it pose if architectural column is used as an structural column as per your solution ?

they r two types of columns...architectural are decorative non-load bearing elements while structural are ...well... load bearing with structural &analytical properties.. Apart from the fact that the latter behave differently and are basically a different discipline; if you are treating REVIT as a drafting tool then there is no difference u can just use structural columns the first place. BUT IF u are working BIM then your model and its elements should reflect the right information as it ought to be...

talk to your structural engineer and exchange information that's the right way to go...then use structural columns where needed and architectural columns where there is no need for structural columns

That is one good thing about REVIT and BIM it puts the credibility of the engineer and/or architect at stake 🙂 but again where's the problem in that? Right?
