Arc geometry on divided surface

Hello, 

 

Does anybody know what is the best way to place an arc model on a divided surface? I tried to use generic model pattern based but it didn't work. Please see attached photo. I want to place arch columns on the vertical lines without having to divide the columns.  Arched Column.JPG

This Model inside a Mass family type. I can create a new family and insert it into this file but then I would have to rotate and copy on each line because I can't use array feature inside this file. My last solution is to insert this model into a project file and then create a sweep model in place. I was looking for a fast and flexible way to do that.

Correct...my next guess would be Dynamo, but I'm not versed enough in that to be much help.

Please see attached screen shot. I have modeled the geometry (arched column) in a separate family and insert it in the mass family, now I'm copying the arched column to get it on the vertical lines. What I'm trying to achieve though, is to model a generic pattern based family and apply it to this surface without being divided (one curved piece).

Create the column as an adaptive family with a through-point form then place it on nodes of the surface and use Repeater to populate it. 

 

Share your mass file if you want an example.

I saw that. I still can't visualize what you are trying to do (e.g. what you are describing)?

I read your question again and I think you want to use Wall by Face to to create a monolithic smooth surface.

Nice job, @constantin.stroescu.  

 

So you also think the OP is talking about curved supports? I still don't know for sure if that's what he means by "Arched geometry on a divided surface".   All I know is that thinking about it made me hungry for a Big Mac.  I wonder why?

These are , in fact,  good exercises for us , and maybe useful for others.

Don't use a pattern based family to create the column. Use an adaptive generic family with several adaptive points (use the same number of points as your mass horizontal division), a spline through those points, and a profile to create the column form from the spline.  Turn on Points under surface presentation in your mass file and host the adaptive column on a series of points.  Select it and use Repeater tool to populate it on the entire surface.

What I showed was curved Beams applied in the Project Environment to Mass Surfaces (the curved "glass" structure shown) -- which could be easily divided and host pattern-based panels.   Making the beams do this was easy. Just select edges and presto! - a curved beam.
