Apply an appearance to a wall sweep

Anonymous
Not applicable

I've downloaded a wall from a supplier and I've created a couple of sweeps on it as you can see in image 1. I've applied an appearance to the sweeps in the original file and then loaded it into my project, the sweeps pull through fine but the appearances on them don't, does anyone know why this might be?

Thanks in advance

Is the material already defined in your project?  If so, it overwrites when you import the object.

Keep in mind that Project Materials rule. By that, I mean that if a Material named "Red" in the Family and a Material named "Red" in the Project are using different shades of red -- the Project's "Red" will be used.

What do you mean by the material already defined in the project? How do i check?

Thanks

Go to your materials browser and check if the material name exists.

The materials do exist in the project but only because i have loaded the wall into it. If i delete the material it removes it from the wall and the floor i use in the project

The sweep has a material.  The wall has a material for its facing layer.  Check if these are the same material.  Check that the material is defined as you want it to be.  Do not delete it.  The material exists in your project because the floor already has a material with that name.

How do you check what materials have been assigned to a wall, sweep etc? When you look in the materials there's a long list and no clear way of telling.

I've come from Solidworks which is far far easier to assign materials, I feel like Autodesk have made this much harder than it needs to be

Look at the object properties to see what material is applied.  In the case of walls, you will find it in Type properties and edit structure - there you can see the materials that are assigned.

I've looked through the wall properties in the project and compared it with the properties in the original wall file and they match up. So i decided to create a new project using the standard Autodesk architect project and then copied the wall into this project to make sure it wasn't a material in the project over-writing the material of the wall, exactly the same thing is happening! I've tried 2 different ways of inserting the wall into a new project; copy and paste, and "load as group" both have the problem. i'm assuming this is some kind of glitch with the software?

nvm:) not sure what the problem is, just define the material for the sweep in the wall type in the project?
hmmm, it does respond a little strange... Just delete/recreate the sweep in your project with the material you want.

and to add to my last comment; I just created a similar instance of the wall in the original wall file and it lost it's materials on the sweeps. So the problem is in the wall file.

I've attached the file if someone could take a look and see if there's an easy fix

Thanks for the suggestion Martijn, I removed the sweeps in the wall file and then added them in my project template instead, added (using the paint tool) the materials to each sweep but same problem again.

Is there a way to apply a material to the sweep in the wall type properties?

You can set material in the project when editing the sweep. See attached.
edit: ow, additional step is edit structure.

This link https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2019/EN... suggests that you can set the material of a sweep in the type properties, but i cant find it for the life of me

Another option could be to use create parts and uncheck material by Original, select material.
