Adding elements to Structural Beam family changes beam elevation

When I add elements like a nailer or angle bracket to my structural beam family it works great, but affects the elevation of the beam when it's placed in the project. Basically it moves to the highest plane in the family (see image).

I've tried changing the reference planes to "not a reference" as well as both modelling the extra elements in the same beam family and nesting them from a separate family.  I'm using Revit Lt so assemblies aren't an option.  Any ideas?

Instead of trying to dumb down the Family, why not add the Structural Connections at the Project Level?

I could be mistaken, but I don't believe Revit Lt does structural connections.
