Adding a legend to my template

So I am wanting to add the legend I set up for one of my projects to my standard template so I don't have to add it each time. I read that you can copy/paste but that only seems to work when coping to sheets with in the same project that it was created.  Thoughts?

There is a tool that allows you to transfer certain view types from one model to another.  However, it does not work for Legends.  My suggestion is to create a new Drafting View in your project file.  Copy / Paste the contents from your Legend into the new drafting view.  It won't work for everything, but you should be able to capture most of the content and text.

Then open up your template click on Inset tab --> Insert From File tool.  This will allow you to bring the drafting view into your template.  Then go ahead and create a new Legend view in your template and copy / paste from the Drafting view into the Legend.

Legends can be copied project to project as long as you are in the same Revit session....

Be sure that your scales match up prior to pasting.

Not sure what you mean by having the same sessions open. I have both my template and my project open and when I try to copy I get an error (see attached)

I don't think you can copy paste model elements placed in a Legend view, only drafting and detail elements.

Then how is this beneficial for a Revit user or company when it's common practice to have standard templates and standard legends but can't use Revit to set up a standard Legend because you can't copy the model elements such as Wall types (again a common thing) ? Or am I missing something?

@Anonymous the Legend would need to be pre-created in the template, with the wall types, families that are included in the Legend are a part of the template. Any project specific information can then be added on an as-needed basis.
