How do I check the "active view", its parameters and the visibility settings?

Look at the Property panel. CTRL+1 to turn it on if you don't have one.

The message just means that the object you are placing is not visible in the current, "active" view because the Object Style Category (or element by Filter) is turned off in the current ("active") view (under the view's Visibility/Graphic Overrides) , or because the object is being placed outside of the current ("active") view's View Range.

Just starting a new project. I saw that I was working in "Depth" not
"Height". Got it figured out. Thank you!
