Able to insert/import Point Cloud in Family Editor

Hi there!!!

I would like to post a small idea on "How to insert point-cloud in to revit family editor". Please excuse me if already you know this. Load the point cloud into AutoCAD, and crop the point cloud as you want for ex: crop it to a door (that you want to create as a family), and save the cad file with the cropped region. Open the revit family editor, and insert the cad file you saved with the point cloud. Now you can trace the door from the point cloud.

Thank you for reading.

This is a good work around but it would be nice to have a workflow that allows a user to take an RCP and bring it directly into the family editor. Typically I work between Recap Pro and Revit quite often and adding a third software and workflow seems cumbersome. It would be nice if we could remove that step with a quick import button in ReCap that places the cropped area directly into Revit. I don't know if this would be something that other users want but would like to see who would.

I tried this using ReCap Pro 2016, AutoCAD Civil 3d 2016, and Revit 2016. I can import the rcp file to Revit without any problems until I try to import into the family editor. I tried importing the .dwg point cloud into the family editor but the points are not visible. It seems that all I imported was this empty box...

I don't think it should make a difference but the point cloud is the result of photogrammetry processed in PhotoScan. Also, I am using the student licenses since I am still in school but these should have full functionality...

I welcome any insights people may have on this.

anyone found a solution? Is it because it's the educational version?

No.  Every version is the same regarding what you are asking.

Are you referring to the impossibility to import directly the point cloud, or the fact that with PrathapSekar's method you cannot see the points?

You can always bring the rcp into a project file. Group the model you want as a family, and then save as family.
