2018.2 Corrupt Central Model

Anonymous
Not applicable

While working in a local copy of a central model in the latest version of Revit (2018.2), I've been getting an error message when synchronizing that reads "You cannot synchronize to central until the model is repaired", see the attached image for the full message. This error has recently been happening more frequently - as much as once per week. Myself and two other team members are working from the same central model, but the corruption only occurs when a local copy is saved from my machine. This error has occurred on three separate projects from my computer, meaning the model itself is not part of the issue. We've noticed the corruption often happens when myself and another user synchronize simultaneously. It seem the path to the central model is disrupted when this happens, but out of 23 licenses in our office, this error has only occurred from my machine.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Autodesk in its entirety on my computer, but this was ineffective as I continue getting the message after reinstalling. My computer meets all of the hardware and space requirements to run Autodesk.

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions!

Hi @Anonymous

Thanks for posting on the Revit Architecture forum!

Sorry to hear that you are facing issues with the software.

You cannot synchronize to central until the model is repaired. Use the Repair Central Model command to repair the central model \\{Path}\{Model Name}

Please try the steps below and let me know if this helps:

  • discontinue use of the corrupt model.
  • Identify a workstation with a local copy of the central model you wish to use to repair the central model.
  • Click Collaborate tabManage Models panelManage Models drop-downRepair Central Model.

A message displays when the central model has been repaired.

  1. Close the active model.
  2. Create a new local copy of the central model.
  3. Direct users to create local copies of this new central model and resume their work.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

We had this issue in our office about a year ago. Our issue was all the computers where syncing to another computer someone was working on. The solution was to have an external network storage device that all the computers are connected to. Try auditing your file, and see if that helps.

Hi @Anonymous

I just wanted to follow up here, any progress on this issue?

Were you able to try the steps listed in my previous post?

Hi ,

I am able to repair the model after the corruption error, but it only serves as a temporary fix. Other users in the model at the time of the corruption lose any work before their last save, or have to copy and paste into a new central model if at all possible.

We've discovered the issue occurs anytime multiple users are synchronizing at the same time. Typically when this occurs, a temporary window displays saying the central model is inaccessible. This message only shows for 2-5 seconds and the synchronizing resumes. With this corruption error, Autodesk is not understanding two users are synchronizing and immediately loses the path to the central model. This issue is only occurring with my machine and Revit license, not with other users in the office.

Hi @Anonymous

Since this issue is user specific, can you send us your Revit file, NFO and journal file to test why this occurs on your machine?

Let me know if you have questions about these files.

I can send you a private upload folder if you'd prefer.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yes, please send the private upload folder. I'll need clarification on where to find the NFO.

Thanks!

Did you end up learning anything from the uploaded file?  I'm having a similar issue with a file...  Multiple users, large file, linked models, point clouds, Central model saved to a server, etc.

Hi @joemcninch

Please create a separate post for your issue and paste the link here.

We will need a journal, NFO and system files to investigate.

Model corruption is specific to a user, model and set up.

Let me know if you can share the files and I can set up a private folder for you.

@joemcninch  this may indicate the presence of a corrupt family or families within the model. Please try the following steps to search for, and correct, any corrupt families within your project model.

1. Open a COPY of the original model
2. Save out the families. When Revit finds one that's corrupt, it will crash.
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2016/EN...
3. Make note of the family that crashed Revit (the last family will be visible on the status bar in the lower-left corner)
4. Close Revit
5. Reopen Revit
6. Open the central model from step 1.
7. Delete the corrupt family from step 3.
8. Save the model
9. Repeat steps 2-8
10. Repeat until Revit doesn't crash while saving the families.
11. Get clean copies of the original families and reload them into the ORIGINAL model and overwrite the existing families.

It's essentially the same process as outlined in the Solution section of this AKN article.

Thanks for the reply.  I'll have to check out those links.  I did perform the family export yesterday, and did not come across any corrupt files that gave me any errors or crashed my model.

I'm thinking its some kind of server latency issue we're experiencing when we have multiple users in a large file who are all working and attempting to save.  I'll post back if I find anything else out.  I may also share the model with Autodesk to see if they can help advise.

Zip up and post the latest journal file. That may offer a clue as to what's going on behind the scenes.

I am having this issue too. Does Revit 2017.2.3 Update or 2018.3.1 Hotfix Update resolve it?

Thanks.

@Anonymous the latest updates helps, and it is recommended that all users should be on the same build.

@Anonymous 2017.2.3* should have fixed the issue since his journal indicated that he was on an older version.

Hi-

I am having this exact same issue as the original poster. I am working in Revit 2018.3 model and I am the only one getting the repair central model error. Can you please help me? I can send you the file and journals and such. I would really appreciate it- because I have tried it all and it sounds like you guys were able to solve his issue!

Are you working in BIM 360? If so, try clearing the cache.

Also, make sure ALL team members have the latest updates for Revit 2018 installed. The latest update for 2018 is 2018.3.3

Have you checked for any available system updates to install?

Or tried a new Revit profile? Try renaming the following folder then restarting Revit.

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Revit\<product and release>

Your user profile folder will be recreated upon restarting Revit.
