Hi, and welcome to Revit API programming!
However, before you even start programming in the Revit API, I would strongly recommend the basics of manual Revit product usage through the end user interface.
Without Revit product understanding, you will not know what you are doing (or even what you wish to achieve) within the BIM context.
In the end user interface, you can implement a family for your sensors and use the family instances to represent individual items.
However, please do not discuss that here, since this forum is dedicated to programming, not to your need to develop your end user workflow first.
To get started with the Revit API, I suggest that you first of all take a look at the getting started material and work through the step-by-step instructions provided by the DevTV and My First Revit Plugin video tutorials:

That will show you what other important material is available that you MUST be aware of, answer this question of yours, and many, many more besides.
